Oaxaca, a jewel in southern Mexico, is a place that sparks the imagination and fills the soul. Known for its vibrant culture, colorful markets, and rich history, it’s the perfect destination for women seeking an authentic and immersive travel experience. From ancient ruins to bustling food markets and artisan villages, Oaxaca invites you to slow down, connect, and soak in everything that makes this region unique.

The heart of Oaxaca lies in its bustling capital, where you’ll be surrounded by cobblestone streets, colonial architecture, and beautiful town squares. Start your journey by exploring the city’s rich cultural heritage – marvel at the intricately designed Santo Domingo Church, wander through the Zócalo (main square), and pop into the Oaxaca Textile Museum to admire the handmade crafts that are an essential part of the region’s identity.

Oaxaca is also a hub for art and political expression, with a deep connection to its indigenous roots. Oaxaca has long been home to artists who use their work to express both cultural pride and political activism. The lithographs produced here, often filled with themes of resistance and social justice, tell powerful stories about the region’s history, struggles, and triumphs.

Oaxaca’s art scene is also deeply rooted in tradition. You can explore stunning mosaic pottery, vibrant handwoven textiles, and colorful painted wood carvings in the markets and villages surrounding the city. These artistic traditions are passed down through generations, and visiting the artisans provides a chance to understand the cultural significance behind their craft.

A highlight of any trip to Oaxaca is its food – a true feast for the senses. The region is known for its mole (a rich, flavorful sauce made from chilies, chocolate, and a blend of spices), often paired with tender chicken or pork. Visit the lively Oaxaca markets, where you can sample local delicacies like tlayudas (crispy tortillas topped with beans, cheese, and meats), mezcal (the smoky spirit made from agave), and fresh tamales. These are all best enjoyed while chatting with the friendly locals or sitting down for a meal with your travel companions, making each bite a shared experience.

Oaxaca is home to some of the most remarkable pre-Columbian ruins in Mexico, offering a deep connection to the region’s Zapotec roots. Depending on our curiosity and collective spirit, we’ll explore either the majestic hilltop ruins of Mount Alban, once a grand Zapotec capital with sweeping valley views, or intricate, mosaic-filled temples of Mitla, a sacred site known for it’s unique geometric stonework- designs that continue to influence Oaxacan textiles, pottery, and other contemporary art to this day. Either experience promises a powerful glimpse into the ancient heart of Oaxaca.

For a more hands-on experience, visit the small villages that surround Oaxaca. Many of these villages are known for their artisan crafts, such as handwoven rugs or painted wood carvings, and often have workshops where you can try your hand at creating something of your own. Whether you’re learning how to make traditional Oaxacan pottery or experiencing the art of weaving, these activities help you connect with the people who carry on ancient traditions.

But no trip to Oaxaca would be complete without a mezcal tasting. Oaxaca is the heart of mezcal production, and visiting a local women owned mezcal distillery is a truly special experience. You’ll learn about the meticulous process of making this iconic spirit, from harvesting the agave to the distillation process. After a tour of the distillery, you’ll have the chance to taste various types of mezcal, each with its own unique flavour profile, and maybe even join in on a fun, lively celebration with fellow travellers.

What truly makes Oaxaca special is its ability to connect travellers to the local community. The region exudes warmth, and the people you meet along the way will leave a lasting impression. Whether you’re shopping at a local market, admiring handmade crafts, or simply sharing stories with other women, you’ll feel a sense of connection that’s both heartwarming and enriching.

With its vibrant culture, rich history, stunning landscapes, and incredible food, Oaxaca offers an adventure that’s both deeply personal and profoundly inspiring. Every moment in Oaxaca invites you to slow down, connect, and enjoy the richness of life.

So grab your camera, pack your curiosity, and get ready to explore Oaxaca. It’s a destination that will awaken your senses, fill your heart, and leave you with memories that last a lifetime.
